The long dry season. Animals gather around permanent water and grass is short, making game viewing at its easiest — also when the northern Serengeti river crossings usually happen.
The short rains bring green landscapes and thinner crowds. Showers are usually brief afternoon storms rather than all-day rain, and parks stay accessible.
January–February is calving season in the southern Serengeti — dramatic predator action. April–May is the long rains, quietest and cheapest, with some camps closing in the wettest areas.
