Yes, broadly — it's one of East Africa's most visited and well-established safari and beach destinations. As with any destination, ordinary precautions (the kind covered on this page) go a long way.

Many women travel solo in Tanzania safely, especially on guided trips where you're with a driver-guide throughout. Dressing modestly — covering shoulders and knees — is respectful and common practice, especially on Zanzibar and in smaller towns. For getting around outside your safari vehicle, use hotel-arranged transfers or a vetted driver rather than hailing transport on the street. The same general precautions (avoiding walking alone at night, keeping valuables secure) apply as they would anywhere.

Tanzanian law does not recognize same-sex relationships, and public displays of affection are best avoided regardless of orientation. Most LGBTQ+ travelers visit without incident by exercising the same discretion many destinations call for — worth knowing before you go, not a reason to avoid Tanzania.

Your guide carries a first-aid kit and is in radio or phone contact with our office throughout. For anything serious, air evacuation is arranged immediately — across northern Tanzania this is commonly handled through AMREF Flying Doctors' membership plans, which cover the evacuation flight itself, not hospital treatment once you land. That's why travel insurance with medical cover matters just as much as the evacuation itself.
