Coast & Zanzibar
Hot and humid essentially year-round, tempered by sea breezes. Temperatures rarely drop much, even at night — this is beach weather in every month.
Pack for it: Light, breathable clothing; the humidity is the bigger factor than the heat itself.
Serengeti & Northern Plains
Warm, often dry-feeling days, but nights and early mornings on open plains get genuinely cool — game drives often start in a jacket that comes off by mid-morning.
Pack for it: Layers — a warm layer for dawn game drives, breathable clothing for midday.
Ngorongoro Highlands & Kilimanjaro's Lower Slopes
The highest-elevation areas on a typical itinerary, and noticeably cooler than the plains below — the crater rim in particular can be genuinely cold before sunrise.
Pack for it: A proper warm layer, especially for an early crater descent or the mountain's lower forest zone.

Rainfall pattern
Tanzania has two rainy seasons. The short rains (November–December) tend to be brief afternoon showers that rarely disrupt a full day's plans. The long rains (March–May) are heavier and more sustained, and some roads in the parks can become difficult — this is the quietest, cheapest time to visit, but worth planning around if avoiding rain matters to you.

Will rain ruin my safari?
Rarely, during the short rains (Nov–Dec) — usually just brief afternoon showers. The long rains (Mar–May) are heavier and can affect road conditions in some parks, which is part of why this period sees the fewest visitors.
How cold does it actually get at night?
On the plains and especially at higher elevation (the Ngorongoro Crater rim, Kilimanjaro's lower slopes), early mornings can be genuinely cold — cold enough that a warm layer for dawn game drives is a real packing item, not an afterthought.
Is Zanzibar's weather different from the mainland safari parks?
Yes — the coast stays hot and humid year-round, while the inland safari parks have a much wider day-to-night and season-to-season temperature swing.
